The Travel Industry As I Understand It and How I Fit In

Greetings!!

Hello fellow travel lovers!!!! I hope you’re doing well!  I promised I would update you on my journeys in the travel industry and what I’m learning as I go.

Independent contractor travel agents are self-employed individuals who sell travel products and services to clients, typically working from home. They may be affiliated with a host agency, which provides support services such as marketing, training, and technology.

After deciding to pursue a career as a travel agency owner, I reached out to a friend who was already following this passion.  She recommended Outside Agents as a host agency.  I had already been researching on my own and Outside Agents was in my top 3, so that sealed the deal.

How the Travel Industry is Set Up Today

The travel industry is a complex ecosystem that involves a variety of suppliers, travel agents, management companies, and travel consortiums.

Suppliers

Suppliers are the businesses that provide the products and services that travel agents sell to their clients. These include airlines, hotels, cruise lines, tour operators, and car rental companies.

Travel Agents

Travel agents are the intermediaries between suppliers and consumers. They help clients plan and book their travel arrangements and can also provide advice and recommendations.

Management Companies

Management companies are businesses that provide support services to travel agents. These services can include marketing, training, technology, and accounting.

Travel Consortium

Travel Consortiums are a type of cooperative group where each member shares the benefits that come from their collective bargaining power, providing members with access to preferred suppliers and negotiated contracts. Members also benefit from exclusive business development and training resources as well as perks and discounts that they can pass on to their clients.

How it All Works Together

When a client books a trip through a travel agent, the agent will typically contact the suppliers to make the necessary arrangements. The agent will then send the client an invoice for the trip. The client will pay the agent, who will then pay the suppliers.

The Role of Independent Contractor Travel Agents

Independent contractor travel agents play an important role in the travel industry. They provide clients with personalized service and in-depth knowledge of both suppliers and destinations. They can often offer perks based on their supplier relationships and/or consortium memberships.

The Perks of Using Independent Contractor Travel Agents

Good independent contractor travel agents spend lots of their time training and learning everything they can about the destinations and suppliers they sell.  This is where you, the client, really get the perks! We know the latest on where to go and where not to go—and believe me, that changes over time!  The place I went on my honeymoon was wonderful at that time, but isn’t somewhere you’d want to go today.  We also learn how to get our clients the best value for their budget, no matter what level. That’s also a big part of what we learn—where the deals are.  So every day while you’re working, we’re working also, studying up for when you book your next vacation, so that we’ll know the best options to offer you!

The Math of it All

So who pays for me to work as a travel agent and how much does it cost to work with me?  The answer is, travel agent commissions are built into the price of vacation stays by the suppliers.  The price you see listed on all the major travel websites and even the “big box” store websites is the same price I get for you.  And often I can get you extra perks, savings, or credits that you wouldn’t get otherwise!  Many travel agents do charge fees for their services so that they can handle a reasonable number of clients and offer white glove service.  That makes sense to me, and I’m still early in my travel agency journey so I’m not charging any fees yet!

As an added bonus, I can help you create your very own Travel Adventures Bucket List! We can estimate costs, prioritize destinations, and plan your dream trips around your budget and schedule. If you’re reading this, you’re probably like me – limited on time and money. Let’s make the most of what we have and turn your travel dreams into reality!
